If I remember correctly, the Romans who carried out the crucifixion were pagans themselves. They had used crosses many times before - why would they change their standard procedure for an execution for Christ? He was no-one special as far as they were concerned.

Sometimes, you don't need to have any Greek or Hebrew knowlege - all you need is some careful thinking.
