Many uses of the word "horn" are based on the idea
that the horn of an animal, such as an ox, repre-
sents the strength of the animal. So when we read
of the horn when it is used as a symbol, it just
means the strength - Hannah's strength in 1 Sam
2:1; 's strength in 16:15; the strength of
the psalmist's salvation in Psalm 18:2. The ref-
erence in 1 Kings 1:50 is to projections from the
corners of the altar that resembled horns, and so
were given that name.
