Cyn, first of all..if you will except the idea that almost all complex ideas are made up of smaller complex ideas which are made up of quite simple ideas..then talking about state of mind and faith in oneself is mystifying a process that is simple if you can grasp all the smaller ideas that make it up. Religion is a great part of the human heritage. It is a unique trait in that we are the only species to have had such a distance from the imediate dangers facing the natural world as to have time to develope the idea of faith.
When I have spoken to self proclaimed religious people...it almost always comes down to this bad argument for God on the basis I must have faith or a personal experience with him. Now the requirement of faith seems to always depend on some ignorance of human capability. If you take the bible as word your obviously ignorant of evolution. However if you slate the bible as no better fiction than a Tarentino movie...you've missed the point just as well. Faith requires, it would seem, the absence of confidence...a blindness like sitting on the fence and not deciding which gr is greener.
Is all science and human heritage is just a hobby of the faithless? I read history quite a bit. I love the period of mankind between 4million and 6000bc. Sure, you could waste your breath arguing that it is not history because no one wrote anything down, however, we know during that period man became civilized..we know he used tools, fought wars, and slowly conqured the natural world. Somewhere in that unimaginable span of time, he also developed faith. Why is that? What persuaded him to ditch his instict as a self contained entity and throw his eyes and soul up towards the moon...which is perhaps the first thing man saw and prayed to as he became bipedal.
Now we have started to look back and proclaim faith as useless. However it seems mankind needed this faith through his terrible climb to the civilized world today. Only now we may be seeing that like the skin of a snake, it is time to shed this layer of our lives and find the new source of our continuance.....ourselves.
