I too am in the process of learning about string theory and such. There's a lot of stuff going on now involving string theory, and it's potential for bringing us closer to a grand unification theory. And although most of the beginning breakthroughs are being down now, when you and I get to be seasoned physicists, we'll be able to use it to do all sorts of cool stuff:) So good luck with the research, and stick with it!

As for where to find information... I'm in the process of reading a great book by Brian Greene called "The Elegant Universe". He does a great explaining theory while not focusing on the math, and produces good mental pictures! But, I should point out that string theory has grown out of an understanding of relativity and quantum mechanics. And I know you want to learn about string theory, but it may be beneficial for you to step back a bit and look at the older theories first in order to gain some prespective. Someone once said, "sometimes you have to take one step back in order to take two steps forward."
