When I read La Belle Dame Sans Merci, I think of neoplatonism. That is that there is another world, a world of ideas, perfect and immutable. Our reality would be constitued of the shadows of these ideas. I read the poem as if the knight had been acquainted with this idea of beauty. He would have met the perfect beauty, the ideal beauty. If that is true, his dream would be his own warning that people who have grasped that idea cannot return to the world. It makes sense to me that if he knows what the ideal beauty is like, he must die to this world (in a sense) because this reality is so imperfect compared to the other world (Am I clear?). From this point, the whole poem makes sense, I think. If you have anymore question, you can write to me, I like this poem very much and I would be delighted to read it over to find some more info! Hope it helped!
