Dear George,

Question #1 - has George seen Europe?

If by Europe we mean only the rich economic powerhouses of Western Europe, then yes, the average person their may be "better off" (economically) than the poor in America. However, if by Europe we mean the entire land land m from the Iberian peninsula over to the Ural mountains of Russia, including the British Isles and Scandinavia, then Rush is probably right. This is the traditional geographic definition of Europe and therefore it includes Eastern Europe, most of which is pathetically poor. The poor of the United are for sure much better off than the average person in this very large land m.

Not only have I seen Europe, I have lived here for a while, and I would recommend a several year stay as a sure cure for any deluded liberal who still thinks socialistic redistribution of wealth is a viable way of improving the lives of "the poor."

I would also add that nothing in Rush's remark as you quote it (although context could contradict this) limits the meaning of "better off" to financial condition. The reasoning and pion of Patric Henry escapes most modernist Americans who are quite content on the whole to trade freedom for economic security. But at what price freedom? While far from perfect, America is still the freest country on the planet, though those liberties are being attacked daily. For those who think like Henry, yes - it is better to be poor and free than taken care of and restrained, controlled, and coerced. "Give me liberty" - any day of the week!
