I think, though I'm not certain of this, that Aescylus was the first to add a *third* actor, thus allowing much more complicated interactions between characters. Before that only two actors were used.
The first piece of evidence for this I can think of offhand is the trial scene in the Eumenides, where Athena, Apollo and Orestes are all on stage at once (as well as the chorus of Furies).
