: Hi there. Well, I am a student at Roger Williams University and one of my ignments in History is on Tocqueville. I have tried reading "Democracy and Equality" from the book Ideals and Ideologies but I do not understand the selection at all!! My paper needs to discuss..."according to Tocqueville, how does American society of the 19th century differ from Eurpean societies?"....that is only part of my paper. However, I need help. I do not understand what he is saying. Please help me!
: thanks!
Vanessa,
I just completed my MA thesis in history on Tocqueville's philosophy of history so I may be of some help. The book that you're reading sounds like a textbook and not Tocqueville's work itself. Tocqueville found a number of things "different" or unique about the U.S. compared to Europe. The most obvious one is what Tocqueville calls "the equality of conditions." He observes that in the US, contrary to Europe, almost everyone is equal. He defines equality in a # of ways. This is not only equality in terms of income, it
is also equality in terms of philosophy, religion, pastimes, work habits, and political views. (Try taking a brief look at Democracy in America for more comparisons. The first volume of the two would be more beneficial for your purposes. The U.S. is also a truly democratic state, unlike the states of Europe at the time he was writing (1830s). Most of the European states were still monarchies at that time. He addresses mainly France in Democracy in AMerica, an example of a state in an inequality of conditions: though it is
after the Revolution, he still feels that France is experiencing problems of inequality of conditions. Hope this info helps, vanessa. If you have any other questions or comments please email me at scott.bailey@murraystate.edu
