: Has anyone got any good links or imformation about mordern criticisms and opinions of Aristophanes' works? and can anyone think of any modern comedians similar to him in style?
If you're looking for a modern comedian who includes all that Aristophanes did, you're likely out of luck. These days people have a huge choice of comedy shows to watch, and will choose the ones they want - no-one these days tries to provide 'something for everyone' the way the Attic comedians had to. Most of our modern comedy shares something with Aristophanes, though. Pantomime probably has the most in common, but because it is usually thought of as a children's thing, there tends to be less political satire, and slightly less crudeness. Have I Got News For You and Spitting Image pretty much cover the political aspect (tearing into public figures' private lives, reputations and so on?) Bottom and it's ilk have the innuendo and slapstick elements. Singing comedians, or musicians with a by-line in comedy are two a penny, pick your own example... The clic comic stereotypes (the surly doorkeeper, for example) must have something in common with Harry Enfield's characters. There's nothing new under the sun...
