ok am trying to answer this question myself at the moment, i personally think that it is important to understand the political background not only of the events referred to in the plays themselves, but also the context in which the plays were performed; the dionysia festival. here are a couple of titles i have found useful:

'the poet's voice'- simon goldhill (this is a collection of essays on ancient poetic literature, i liked chapter 3: comic inversion and inverted commas: aristophanes and parody.)

'nothing to do with dionysos'- eds john winkler and froma zeitlin (social context essays for greek ancient drama)

'the origins of the pelopponesian war'- g.e.m. de ste croix
