In Pere Goriot, the character of Vautrin (as he is known in that story--an alias for Jacques Collin) says something to the effect that behind every great fortune there is an undiscovered crime. In case you do not have a copy of Pere Goriot available there is an excellent translation posted on the net by Project Gutenberg. Information as to location is available in earlier postings. Translations vary widely. Among "Team Balzac" the older translations are preferred as being more colorful, less bland in the use of adjectives. etc.
