Vautrin is definitely an interesting character. I got hooked on him too from Pere Goriot. His real name is Jacques Collin
Team Balzac of Project Gutenberg has completed their goal of putting the entire Human Comedy on the Internet. A list of books can be found at:
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~spok/metabook/humancomedy.html
Other stories in which Collin appeared include:
A Distinguished Provincial at Paris (actually part of Lost Illusions), Scenes from a Courtesan's Life, The Member for Arcis, and Cousin Betty. You might also be interested in his aunt, Jacqueline Collin who appears in Scenes, Cousin Betty and The Unconscious Humourists.
At the end of each story that PG has placed on the net is a list of characters that appear elsewhere in The Human Comedy, so you can trace any other characters in which you develop an interest. I was also interesed in Rastignac and Bianchon.
We are in the process of typing a biography of each of the characters (in excess of 2,000) which was done around 1900 by two Balzac lovers. It should be ready later this year and might be of interest to you.
