Pagan influences on Beowulf, I point out that the longest night of the year would not have gone by unobserved by Beowulf the pagan. In all likelihood he would have burned a Yule log to carry him through the night and there would have been some form of merrymaking. : Many carryovers -- the use of holly, Yule logs, the very date of the celebration of Christmas -- are the result of a sort of merger of the pagan and Christian observances. : Now, where's that eggnog?
