There are movements , but there is no inert or in variable object which moves : movement does not imply a mobile." -----From Creative Mind : : Bergson describes the continuity of our INNER LIFE as that of a flowing or of a page , but of a flowing and of a page which are sufficient in themselves ,the flowing not implying a thing which flows and the page not presupposing any states by which one pes : the THING and STATE are simply snapshots artificially taken of the transition ; and this transition , alone experienced : naturally , is duration itself. ------------From Melanges , 98 : Bergson's own view is that a free act is one where the self alone will have been the author of it and it will express the whole of the self. ; we are free when our acts spring from our whole personality , when they express it , when have that indefinable resemblance to it which one sometimes finds between the artist and his work. Freedom is the relation of the concrete self to the act which it performs. This view has various corollaries . For one thing freedom is a matter of degree , and one of Bergson's criticisms of libertarianism is for making freedom absolute. Free acts - preumably he means fully free ones - are exceptional. Our ordinary run-of-the-mill habitual actions may well be determined. : :
