These are a few thoughts about the letter of Paul to the Galations and the book of James.
If anyone wants to discuss Christianity with me, I am willing if they are sincere and open to humble discussion.
Galations and the book of James should be read "side to side" because they collectively emphasize GRACE and the need for WORKS that are consistent with one's FAITH. Notice I am referring to the Christian's walk here, Salvation is a whole other subject partly addressed by Ephesians 2:8-10.
I have read all the material in this lecture hall up to circa: end of 1998 and hope this input will help anyone who is genuinely seeking God's truth. Yes, I betray myself, for I speak here of God's truth as opposed to "general" non-subjective truth. Pilot's question of 'What is truth?' could have been rhetorical. Responding to Jesus' ertion that He testified to the truth and those who embrace truth really heed Him, was Pilot taunting Jesus? Read John 18:33-38 for the context. Notice Pilot's next action was to "move for a dismissal" of charges against Jesus.
But back to Galations. My favorite verse in this page is Gal 3:6 'Consider Abraham: "He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."
The charge often leveled to Christians is our non-consistent lifestyle, examples of sin, hyprocricy, etc. What one needs to consider is the truth taught by scripture that RIGHTEOUSNESS is a "comodity" that only God can distribute to fallen man through the sole mediator, Jesus Christ. In Galations, Paul tells us that this "crediting" or impartation of righteousness to Abraham took place before and not after circision. Abraham simply chose to believe God at His word and received righteouness into his "account" which is ogous to getting a huge sum of money placed in your savings account truly aside from your ability and resource.
But in defence of the book written by James, faith without works is dead. That is, you must act on what you believe and try to do what the Bible says. Mere ascenting faith won't cut it. Even the demons believe and tremble.
Well, for anyone curious, I would be happy to tell about the "Captain of my Salavation" in Hebrews 2:10 and I testify that if you draw near to God, he will draw near to you!
