: I was wondering if you could give me some information on the differences between Darwin and Lamarks theories of evolution, in favour of Darwin's theory, as i have to write a persuasive essay on the topic
As I understand it, Darwin postulated evolution gy "survival of the fittest" meaning that traits that enabled a creature (plant, animal) to successfully procreate, and thus fill an ecological niche, would prosper.
Lamark on the other hand presupposed that acquired attributes of an individual might be ped on to the offspring. He was basing his evolution upon mechanical, or stimulus-response mechanisms being ped down.
On (bad) example is that if a giraffe streched it's neck during it's life to get a leaf from a higher point on the tree, this would p on to the offspring, rather than darwin's concept that the Giraffe with the longer neck
because it had more food available, would be more likely to procreate. This is simplist.
Note: Lamark's concept works for societies, religions and other mechanistic relationships that build on a foundation and grow, adding attributes.
