There are actually three different kinds of "devils" in Dante's Inferno - one type really aren't "devils" in the Christian sense, in that they are characters taken from classical mythology; these include (in order of their appearance) Charon, Minos, Cerberus, Plutus, Phlegyas, Medusa, the Minotaur, the Centaurs, the Harpies, Geryon, and Antaeus and the other giants (Titans). A second type of "devil" is the fallen angels who were expelled from heaven at the same time that Lucifer was; in addition to Lucifer himself, the "neutral" angels are found at the very beginning, in the Vestibule of Hell above the first circle, and the others who actually sided with Lucifer guard the walls of the City of Dis (boundary between Circles 5 and 6) along with the Medusa. The third type of "devils" assist in tormenting the sinners in three different rounds (bolgias) of the Eighth Circle - the first round (seducers), the fifth (grafters), and the ninth (sowers of discord); however, unlike the fallen angels alluded to above, they are not overtly identified as former angels who were thrown out of heaven.
