: I am writing a reseach paper on the Divine Comedy and am not sure which stance to take. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!
The Divine Comedy needs to be experienced on many levels at the same time. The fact that it can be while always remaining consistent on all of them is a measure of its greatness.
Among those levels are:
- an ostensibly true story of an actual journey made between good Friday and Easter Sunday by one Dante Alligiery
- a description of the state of souls after death
- a poetic exploration of the state of one's soul during life.
- a course of experience (rather than study) for the pursuit of spiritual enhancement (this, I think is the closest parallel to Joseph Campbell's work)
The marvellous thing about this poem is that it never fails to reward further exploration and depth. Good luck, enjoy.
