: Quite often when i get stuck on an essay i have a tendency to just stick the title up on a discussion board and see what happens.
A problem is the low traffic on this message board.
: The question is such "Why does Hume want to establish a standard of taste?"... I know the kind of thing i'm after but i don't want to just go through the text siting references and pitting empirical against rational thought etc. (though obviously that IS far too simple)
I hear you there, Sister!
: PS - alternatively if anyone has any good links to sites that deal specifically with Hume's aesthetics that they think would be helpful that would be great too.....
You don't need links, just read Hume himself. I refer to the last chapter in the inquiry into human understanding. Hume talks about the real spur to his philisophical undertakings, his own nature and his "rare bird" personality.
If I may sum up: Hume faced the void, and since it was a time when the human race was growing up, he was prepared to live with the void -privately- he understands that society, and the mes would not be able to deal with the void and with convention destroyed, people would start to cannabalize each other and the built-up capital of thousands of years of the error of civilization.
Hume knowing man is free to do what he wills, tries to bolster the pleasant attitudes of bourgeoise living so that people want to live that way and civilization is saved.
Nietzsche took that to the next level, and said "if I am really free, wouldn't I go against the grain just by probability? I mean how can we all think the same way and want the same things?" Basically he rejects Hume's compromise and says be all you can be or kill yourself.
