The resurgent interest in Leucretius (who popularized Epicurus) by thinkers like Gandi, Marcen, Galileo, Hobbes etc. was the straw that broke the back of religion for the learned. If teh Ancients, who had less empirical understanding of the world than we moderns, could "deduce" the truth of the nature of teh world, how can we deny it any longer for this "philosophy of sheep herders"? How would things have been different if Epicurus was given as much weight by the state as other philosophers, especially Plato?
