I beg to disagree. Descartes was not trying to prove the existence of others, that was not his objective. His goal was to prove to himself that he existed. He wanted to somehow answer personally for himself the question of how we know we are who we are, do we exist, are we a part of a dream or a reality? He did not intend to become famous with this statement, that was not his objective eiher. So you cannot criticise him for being famous or not having gone "far enough with it" he went as far as he wanted to becuase that was his objective.
