Dear Amanda:
I don't believe Descartes really thought that he had a theory
of the mind. What he thought he had was a program
of research which, if followed by enough scientists
round the world in collaboration would, in a few decades,
result in a theory of the mind. Reading Descartes
sentences as if they are a finished thoeory makes
them pretty incoherent, which is hardly like him. Reading
them as a thematic program, as a set of requirements which
any scientific theory of the mind must satisfy, makes more
sense. Try again with this in mind.

sincerely, Dr. Bourbaki
