: Hi :) i only left short notes to what i believe are correct... i HOPE i'm right - have an exam on Descartes (Founders of Modern Philosophy) tomorrow!!! Cheers... : : > 1. Descartes claims that logical, geometrical and mathematical truths are : absolutely certain. : : FALSE : (because he says later in his Meditations t it could've been the work of an Evil Genius who put such thoughts as Logic/Mathematical Truths in his head.) : : > 2. Descartes believes that it is impossible to doubt the existence of anything whatsoever. : : FALSE : (If he were to doubt everything whatsoever, it would include the fact that "he doubts everything whatsoever"... kinda circular, then.) : : > 5. From the "dream argument," Descartes infers that one can never be deceived regarding the real existence of the physical objects which one perceives. : : FALSE : (Dreaming argument justs infers that it is possible that all we perceive, the physical world as we see it to be are all just a dream.) : : : > 8. The result of Descartes' method of systematic doubt is his discovery that the fact that I exist implies that I am doubting. : : TRUE : (Actually, i would say "FALSE"... 'coz i kinda took it to be "i doubt" (which is a form of thinking) "therefore i exist.") : : > 9. The method of systematic doubt is motivated by Descartes desire to establish his philosophy upon a foundation which is impervious to doubt. : : TRUE : (He wanted to find one belief that cannot be denied - a certain and unshakeable truth with which to buil the rest of his beliefs upon.) : : > 19. For Descartes, God is a not deceiver. : : TRUE : (In Med 1, he did hint that (perhaps?) God might be the Deceiver but later, in Med 3, he concludes that since deception is an imperfection of a sort and nothing with relation to God can be imperfect,so God cannot be the Deceiver.) : : Well, i hope this helps... of those i left out, i'm not entirely sure but they appear to be right :)
