After pondering this book and trying to think of some themes, I thought of what dostoevsky might have thought as to the value of material evidence. It seemed to me that he was trying to show that it cannot be relied upon. For instance Father Zossima smelled when he died, which saints supposedly don't do, yet he call a chapter "the life of a saint." Another obvious place where he shows a distaste for material evidence is in dmitri's trial. There was an tremendous amount of material evidence, enough to convict and innocent man.
Let me know what you think of my statement, and if you can think of some more examples I'd love to hear them.
