The book Faust by Goethe is very simular to The Grand Inquisitor in the sense that they both make a pact with the devil. The GI does it through the church to satisfy mankind's need for miracle, mystery, and authority, which is the oppisite path needed to get into heaven but would make humanity happy at the present. Faust also makes a pact with the devil but to satisfy himself. In the chapter entitled a prologue in heaven Goethe uses the book of frequently to have a conversation with the lord and mephistopheles.
