This story was written shortly after the death of Dostoevsky's wife Marya Dimitrievna, but he got the idea from a newspaper account of a similar story. He wrote this short story shortly after his 2nd newspaper (founded by him and his brother Mikail) "Epoch" was launched and they were in desperate need of material at press time. This story was written shortly before "Notes from the Underground", and it is considered to be, aside from "Winter Notes on Summer Impressions", to be the turning point in Dostoevsky's writing style that will lead the way to his style in his greatest novels.
