: I need help.!!!!!
: What are the main themes in medea and how do i go about writing an essay about them!
: Thanks
: Joe
Here are some themes, as outlined by Meyer Reinhold in "Classical Drama, Greek and Roman":
1. Euripides humanizes Medea and thus creates sympathy for all women, who suffer as inferiors in Greek society.
2. Uncontrolled emotions of hate and jealousy overcome reason and bring disaster to all.
3. Fear of insecurity can lead people to create horrible crimes.
4. Internal conflict in Medea between emotions of mother love and desire for revenge.
5. Character study of an emotional oriental woman, an alien among the Greeks, whose love turns to hate and fierce desire for revenge.
6. "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned."
Pick ONE of these themes, and read the play, noting down lines and incidents that illustrate the theme you have chosen. (#1 and #5 may require further research into Greek culture.)
That should get you started. Now you're on your own. Good luck.
