David, the content of Tom Jones is great but the
style is annoying, especially if you plan to read
it aloud. Compare the King James Version with Tom
Jones and you will see that sentence technology
had advanced - or so writers and readers of the
18th century. We in the 20th century prefer much
shorter sentences, and it is not merely because of
shorter attention spans. Intolerably lengthy
sentences seem to demand being broken down into
shorter ones for reading. No one questions C. S.
Lewis as a stylist, and his sentences vary from
long to short, well mixed up. I absolutely love
the content of Tom Jones, though.
