: While I give George Eliot props for achieveing her dream of being a successful female writer in a time when women were supposed to be "seen not heard" so to speak, I found this book incredibly dull. I applaud some of the points she makes in her novel and the story line has great potential, but the novel is so bland and repetitive. She is very long winded as I guess people were back then, and she almost contradicts herself in the book on morals and the values of society, though I suppose she may be doing that to get in the mind perspective of a male in a male dominated society. The main thing though is I found this book dull and I detested reading it for my English cl. Its almost as bad as At Home In Medford, and that's saying something.
