I start out by bringing in a bunch of different magazine adds and discussing how the ads manipulate the audience to buy their product. That leads into talking about propaganda, and what the Russian government was doing. I teach this to seniors and they catch on to that aspect of the novel, but I have found you can't get to deep into the content because they just get lost and bogged down since their history knowledge of this time is not the greatest. They get the basic point . . . that is about it. Also, another cool activity that I do at the end of the novel is give them a cl period and they are given the scenario that an airplane they were on just crashed and they must figure out how to survive. I give them specific things they must accomplish while stranded and so on. Then I just sit back and let them take over, it is great because just about every time they wind up in a similar situation to Snowball and Nap. and how the "government" works out . . . It is fun!
