i agree. we also were required to read this novel in high school. the funny thing was that throughout the book everyone in the cl thought that holden and myself were just alike. salinger somehow knows what is going through atleast some of the younger populations head. also the laungage and some situations in which holden encounters might be offensive to some, but many older people may not realize that the laungage and most situations have been encountered by the end of highschool (or the parents may just try to ignore these things in their children). many of the controversies add to the flavor of the book, and made it relevent enough to my life that it became one of the few books in highschool that i actually read.
