:
: Jerome David Salinger was born in 1919 and is still alive today. As a young boy on the East coast Salinger was expelled from various private prep. schools before graduating from the Valley Forge Military Academy in 1936. From there he went to Columbia University where he took several writing courses. Salinger's first short piece was a short fiction item published in "Story", an influential periodical. His works of short fiction then began to show up in "Colliers's", "The Saturday Evening Post", "Esquire", and "The New Yorker". Salinger's style of writing is is ironic and sharp and characterizes what is called the "New Yorker" school of fiction.

: Because of his sensitivity he secluded himself to a house near Cornish, New Hampshire in the 1950's. Even though producing no more novels, written or compiled from short story, he continued to write short stories for literary publications until 1965. From 1965 until present J.D. Salinger has produced no published works, but he is still held in high regard for his influence on current authors and especially for his influence among younger readers.
