The title is a paper in itself. The word frame, in regards to writing, means something that portrays the normal, the narrative writing style. This chapter, in one word, says that it will set up the base, or the framework for the entire book. Paper and layout are also a frame, and shows what the writer will do with the language. By playing with the frame, Barth shows that he has destroyed the norm, and created something new, destroying all preconceived ideas of how the book will write out. He uses portrait AND landscape on the same page and therefore creates an entirely new frame for the rest of the book. In the line, "Once upon a time there was a book that began..." that repeats itself over and over again, Barth takes an ordinary beginning and "twists" it into something new and unconventional, again destroying stereotypes about the book.
