I don't think the funhouse really exists at all. I think it serves as a metaphor for Ambrose's life, and for the story. In one sense, Ambrose never really gets out of the funhouse of his life, or atleast not untill he figures things out, untill he matures.
But the story as a funhouse is different. The story ends with: "Therefore he will construct funhouses for others and be thier secret operator-though he would rather be among the lovers for whom the funhouses are designed"(97)
In this, I think the "lovers" are ogous to the readers of the story, and the funhouse operator is the story teller. He wished he could be a carefree listener of the story, but instead, he knows he has, or will , become an operator( author). He also shows this throuhout the whole story with the information bits on writing. (italics, the dramatic triangle, blanks and spaces. etc. ) In the end, his fate is set.
