: I have to write a paper on the floating opera and i've read through a lot of essays i found on the internet and books i've bought and i cant' seem to find any general themes to write about...can anyone possibly help me with themes??

: also---is barth a nihilist? i read a few commentarys on that but im unsure if they are saying that he is one..or that he writes like one in the floating opera
I am having the same problem. I have found however that barth is, in fact, nihilism. I found this hard to understand but if you consider the definition of nigilism he fits it almost perfectly. It's shown widely in his other books and short stories. For instance, "Night sea Journey" where the narrator considers life and that it is meaningless.
Personally I find his books rather hard to read because of their depressing themes of "life is meaning less" and "all beleifs and values equal nothing".
