In Reply to: Main Difference Between Calvin and Luther posted by Kristine on September 16, 19100 at 17:21:24:
Luther's theology focused on grace and the ability of all believers who placed their faith in Christ to recieve salvation. His emphasis was on the Book of Romans, and our inability to work towards salvation through such means as indulgences (which Luther was directly confronted with in his parish). Luther's view of communion/the m was akin to that of the Catholic church, as he considered the real presence of Christ to be in the ceremony, but not the elements of communion. (consubstantiation).
Calvin was from a legal background (as opposed to Luther's theological background), so naturally he gave more weight to ecclesiastical organisation (witness his influence in the Presybeterian church) than Luther ever did. He believed in the two sacraments as did Luther, (baptism and the Eucharist), yet he deemphasised the "real presence" in favour of a rememberance of Christ's sacrifice in communion.
Where Luther sought a peaceful reformation from within the Catholic Church before his excommunication, Calvin was militant in his faith from the beginning.
: What exactly were the main differences between Luther and Calvin. They seem like they have mostly the same views. Can someone shed some light pleae.
