: Im trying to write a paper to compare Med 17 to Michel De Montaigne, and im trying to get a handle on exactly what Donne is saying about human nature and worldly ambition. Its kind of hard to tell if he is positive or negative about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. also if anyone can tell where i can find pages about repentance in any of Donne's poems i would appreciate that.
I'm actually writing a paper comparing "Meditation XVII" with Robert Cormier's "After the First Death." I feel that Donne is hopeful about death and he, unlike existentialists, finds meaning in an afterlife. As far as human nature, he is saying that we need to realize that humanity is interconnected and that there is a universal impact of each and every death, "any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."
Hope that helps at all!
