: hey, i am doing a project on Holy Sonnet X and there are a couple questions i have...i am a little confused on the meaning of the couplet, or the last two lines of this poem. also, i am supposed to be looking for different poetic devices and all i have come up with is personification and alliteration. i have been looking for any sort of figurative language, synecdoche, metonymy, symbolism, poetic liscence, and any types of rhyme, but i cant see to find any. if anyone could help i'd appreciate is a LOT! thanks...
The meaning of the poem is to not fear death...it is something that is a natural part of life and human beings give it to much control over our lives. There is also apostrophe...talking to an absent or abstract figure. Also, it is technically a Petrarchan or italian sonnet so the final couplet is not as important as in an Elizabethan one. However, Metaphysical authors liked to bend the rules so it sdoes not entirely follow the pattern of either type of sonnet completely.
