The main purpose of Tartuffe is not to show Orgon as a bad father, but to show the folly of believing blindly in religion. The play is clearly a religious parody, with Tartuffe being the personification of all that is wrong with the Catholic Church in the 17th century, while Orgon and his mother (Mme Pernelle) are the devoted believers who cannot see through the Church's pious facade. The other characters illustrate the stupidity of those who believe blindly, and while Orgon eventually comes to his senses, his mother is the blind devotee who will never be able to find fault with teh Church. Orgon is shown to be an absolute father, but not necessarily bad when he is not exercising his devotion to Tartuffe (the Catholic Church). Does that help?
