There are several good study guides to the Prince including a Cliff notes. The Prince was most likely based on Cesare Borgia the very large, muscular, and violent son of Pope Alexander IV. Machiavelli admired Cesare's violent ruthlessness, his pre-emptive killing of potential enemies, and his manipulative charm. He wrote the Prince rapidly while in political exile and dedicated it to Lorenzo DeMedici (grandson of Lorenzo the Magnificent). He was hurt, embittered and disillusioned. He had always been a republican, but for the sake of obtaining DeMedici favor, and a new political appointment, he sent the Prince to demonstrate his potential utility as a wordly statesmen.
