Hello Manda, Machiavelli is one of the most brilliant minds' I ever had the pleasure of reading. Some of his subject matter may be controversial. I think you should read The Art of War, The Prince, and Discourses on Livy in that order. You may feel different. It's also possible that Machiavelli appeals most to a military theorist or a political philosophist. You should come at it from a theoretical view. And when you see how he takes complicated subject matter and reveals them powerfully and simply. You'll see that he's one the great literary minds' available for reading. I view Machiavelli, Dante, and Boccaccio as required reading. None of the clics should be considered poor, if you want poor writing, consider what the Beatniks had to offer from the Beat Generation. Now that was a bunch of so called literate people who "became" illiterate because they made the mistake of thinking that they had something to offer when they really didn't. They put novelty in place of hard work, and the result was "Garbage."
