The poem represents an early instance of memory as Salvation....a precursor, in that regard, to Wordsworth's Tinturn Abbey. The most important aspect of the poem is the reintigration of the self that accompanies the reverie Coleridge experiences. That experience, undergone before the film that settles over his nightly watch, becomes proleptic. thus we end with the prophesy of Hartley Coleridge's growth into manhood.
