despite countlss uses of propaganda and pretexts by the ministry the g8 protest has been very effective, of course the shooting has been justified again by blair.
HERES THE INFORMATION, FREE TO RE-DISTROBUTE
The Ya Basta–led march was headed by large perspex shields on wheels
and about
500 or so padded-up militants. REVOLUTION and LRCI comrades formed a
contingent
of around eighty towards the front of the march.
The problem with the shields and the heavy padding is that it made the
progress
of the march painfully slow, enabling the police to attack it long
before it
reached the wall around the red zone.
Protective gear is a good idea provided it does not make its wearers
unwieldy
and unable to manoeuvre. Post-modern symbolism shouldn’t get in the way
of
functionality.
The march was attacked with enormous amounts of teargas—some dropped
from
helicopters. The concentration of gas was so great that it eventually
overcame
even those wearing gas masks. Police attacks eventually scattered the
march
which took some time to regroup. But we were able to do so and defend
ourselves.
A “red block” at the back, consisting of LCR service d’ordre members ,
Rifondazione youth, and the International Workers League of Greece
(split-off
from the IST section) unfortunately withdrew up a hill and would not
rejoin the
confrontation with the police.
It was difficult to get an overall picture of the days events. There
were many
demos and sub-demos. Probably 70,000 demonstrators in all were engaged
around
the city.
Evidently some 350 Globalise Resistance people got close to the fence
but were
also heavily ged, clubbed etc. The Cobas march was also attacked by
police.
Various anarchists and autonomists trashed banks and attacked a small
prison.
But its was the police— as in Gothenburg— who were the real
perpetrators of
“violence and hooliganism”— not to speak of murder. During the day they
raided
the convergence centre, lobbing in tear gas grenades.
We—LRCI and REVOLUTION members are all OK so far—a bit overged— but
we will
be on the streets at 10.00am tomorrow and on the big workers
demonstration,
expected to be over 100,000, at 2.00pm
