one of the ways in which you might attempt a criticism of the ox bow incident is to first focus on one of its themes. an important theme in van tilburg's ox bow is rumors and their impact upon the lives of the characters potrayed. for example, rose mapen is bullied into exile by a posse of women who have construed her to be a woman of dubious virtue. and , of course, there is the rumor that kincaid was shot and killed by non existent rustlers.
