It is first necessary to recognize that Islam is not a religion in the general sense of religion. Islam is the pattern that Muslims live by whether it is spiritual, social, economical, political, etc. Therefore, there are laws in Islam that encompass all these issues. Everything that a Muslim does must be Islamic in nature. For instance, Islam allows the leader to hand down punishment to a perpetuater of a crime just like our government does here in America. I find a lot of people asking for liniency towards the perpetuater of the crime and forgetting that there was also a victim. Muslim first have a responsibility to protect the rights of the victim. I remember that when O.J. Simpson was acquited to the charges of killing his ex-wife and her boyfriend, many people who were disappointed with the verdict were calling for a victims right law. Islam gave those victims that right 1400 years ago. Muslims are allowed to fight but only as a form of defence. Muslims cannot start a war. Actually, Muslims did not start this new war. This war begun when Israel illegally expelled scores of defenceless Palestinians from the rightful homeland way back in 1947-1948. The issue of cutting off one's hand for murder, rape is not correct. Murder and rape gets the death penalty in Islam. Here again, these were crimes committed on others and the responsibility is again on the Muslim to protect the rights of the victim. The guilty has voluntarily given up his/her right when they commit the crime. The cutting off of one's hand is for stealing. That law would work well here in America. We are always worried of others stealing our hard earned possessions. Although these are real punishments, people are not walking around Saudi Arabia with missing hands. The law serves as effective deterrent tools and it keeps the society free of these ills that plague us here in America so much.
As a comparison, there is a story in the Bible where a man was about to fall over a clift. His wife reached over and caught hold of him and pulled him back to safety. The man directed his son to cut off the hand of the woman. His son looked at him in disbelief. What did she do wrong? She just saved your life. His father told him that God has commanded him to cut off the woman's hand. When you compare the fate of this innocent woman with the actions of a person who has their hand cut off in Islam for preying on other people's property, you will have to admit that the Islamic teaching is more reasonable and even today, if applied properly, can even solve the acute problems of the west.
