Hi David,

I guess, there are no internet resources on Leo Tolstoy's Excommunication from church: 100 years ago Russian Orthodox Church has forgotten to create Internet site on this subject! To be more serious: it was a stupidity of official church to excommunicate Tolstoy. Since the beginning of 18th century, Orthodox Church has become 100%dependent on Tsar, the institution of Russian Patriarchy was abolished, and so-called Sinode - kind of governmental ministery - has been created to deal with religeous matters (strangely enough it resembled Government Committee on Religeous Affairs created later by Soviet rulers). So after publishing by Tolstoy several papers severely critisizing Tsarist government, the Sinode has decided to excommunicate him. However, by that time Tolstoy was more popular than Tsarist government (and perhaps the church), so the decision of the Sinode discredited the Sinode and the Tsar themselves and instead added popularity to Tosltoy. The situation with Tolstoy and Russian authorities can be illustrated by following famous words of Chekhov. He said: "When Tolstoy will be dead, everything will go to Hell". Then Chekhov was asked: "You mean, everything in literature?", and he answered: "In literature AS WELL."

By the way, already in War and Peace Tolstoy recalled similar stupidity of official church. When the war between Napoleon and Russia started, the Sinode declared Napoleon Antychrist and completely forgot that the tsardom of Antichrist would be 1000 years long!

One more detail. Few years ago the problem of Tolstoy's excommunication was discussed by some religeous authorities again, and they confirmed the 100-year old decision of the Sinode.
