: I would like to know if Anna Karennina is a fictional character or if she's based on a real person.
There is an interesting parallel between Anna and a late 19thcent. Tzar. Tzar (his name escapes me but it was either Alexander I, III, or Nicholas I) had an affair with an undercl woman. The court and Petersburg society was outraged and a great scandal ensued. The tzar wished to marry her (after his first wife had died) and introduce her to public life. He knew that the aristocracy despised her, so he planned to make some concessions to a group of rising constitutialists in order to appease society. He drew up a doent which would have been the primitive beginnings of constitutional government in Russia, but he died the next day, and his son destroyed the doent before it was released publically. I doubt that the woman is the historical basis for Anna, but the similarities are very ironic and interesting.
