From what i understand, candide has to try and find his own philosophy of life. His teacher, Pangloss (which means "all gloss"...that his eyes are covered and he doesnt see the truth)even begins to doubt his own philosophy in the end. Pangloss is the master of optimism, and Martin is that of pessimism. These two were Candide's greatest teachers, but in the end, they both loosen up on their ideas and even begin to follow the ideas of Candide....as in "we must cultivate our garden"
