In terms of "medical materialism", it can be recognized from the text that James is using a reductive term here which explains that any type of religious or spiritual experience may be attributed to some type of physical condition. The severity or quality of the condition may contribute to or induce the experience. So basically, a "vision" that some person may have had could have been because of a severe headache, during which this person felt that they were seeing apparitions of some sort. Medical materialism is just an easy way to give actual physiological reason to unexplainable experiences had by people.
