The only thing that never quite registered with me
about this wonderful book was why Franny had the
nervous breakdown. She was obsessed with the prayer,
that's already been established. I'm just curious what
her motives were pertaining to the Jesus prayer. What was bothering her? Why is she so obsessed? It was never explained what exactly encouraged her to say the prayer. I think my favorite JDS stories are the ones where certain conflicts go without a final resoloution, but it just seemed like he left some loose ends, rather than just leaving possibilities open for the reader to interpret or imagine. I considered the possibility that maybe Franny was pregnant. That would explain the mood swings and her undue emotionality. Any thoughts?
